Can You Keep Growing Your Business and Make Changes at the Same Time?

By Dan Klein, CEO

All things change, well that’s the most obvious thing I could write I guess. What’s clearly evident in the business world these days is that everything seems to be changing more often than it did, and the things that used to work may not be as reliable as they once were. Evolving consumer buying patterns, advances in technology and a revolving door workforce all can add up to a boiling point if they all hit together, which is often the case.

If you’re running a successful business you may overlook the step that in order to maintain that same rate of success you are having, you may need to implement changes at the same time. We use the flying a plane analogy and sometimes it’s pretty accurate. You may need to rebuild part of the plane – as you are in the air. It definitely feels like that while it’s happening.

We hear from business owners every day that are having success bringing in new clients, yet their marketing or sales strategy isn’t working as well as they’d like. We also know that it can seem really overwhelming to open up the can of worms that is “marketing”. It affects so many things like your website, materials, your people, processes and of course your goals.

Our role has changed from implementer – to educator and hand-holder. And that’s not a bad thing. What we are seeing is that in order to really effect the change that’s needed to thrive in the future you have to be willing to try things that may be new and unproven. You won’t know the impact of something new until you go live, and right when you flip that switch you may initially regret it until you see results. We know it’s frustrating and we also see this every day in our work with business owners.

I know that in many businesses they are tired of hearing the cliché “Change or die” and while we don’t want to be overly dramatic it’s kind of true. Many businesses will disappear in the next 10 years, but many more will flourish! Building on what’s working for you now requires the courage to trust that you’re going in the right direction when you try something new in your business. And having the awareness to not let it interrupt what’s currently working well requires a slightly different sill set than what you may have been doing before.

You may need to change how you position your products or services in order to grow in the future. Some changes will have to be made and it’s ok to take some measured risks in trying some new approaches. This is necessary change, but nonetheless still one huge pain in the butt.
